Safari in the Great Rift Valley
The Great Rift Valley separates the grass plains of East Africa from the tropical rainforests of Western Central Africa. The National Parks of Kenya’s Rift Valley, contain an excellent array of wildlife including both black and white rhino, buffalo, impala and leopard to name a few. Thousands of pink flamingos can also be seen at Lake Nakuru, which is a large saltwater lake. Lake Naivasha, which is a fresh water lake, is ideal for bird safaris, and is also host to buffalo and hippo.
Lake Naivasha is a spectacularly beautiful lake just 90 kms north west of Nairobi. Lake Naivasha’s secluded lagoons are fringed with papyrus and Mount Longonot dominates the impressive skyline. Lake Naivasha claims to be home to more species of birdlife than the entire British Isles.
Lake Nakuru is world famous as the home of myriad flocks of greater and lesser flamingos which frequently form a stunning ribbon along the edges of the lake. Another entertaining spectacle found at Lake Nakuru are the large flocks of Pelicans. Birdlife is phenomenal with over 400 species recorded in and around Lake Nakuru.
The Aberdares National Park is a magical place of dense forest and misty moorlands where icy rivers plunge in glorious cascades and waterfalls. The area, set amongst the beautiful Aberdares Mountain range is rich in wildlife. Aberdare National Park is famous for its tree house hotels namely Treetops and The Ark. Consisting of raised walkways set metres above the canopy floor this excellent accommodation provides guests with unique vantage points to view the wildlife below without even having to move from the lodge. As these hotels are also positioned overlooking waterholes Elephant, Lion, Hyena and Leopard to name a few provide guests with constant entertainment.
